Rome, which was located on 7 hills, was founded near the Tiber river. She wolf was getting a drink from this river when she spotted the two twin boys, Romulus and Remus, who had been abandoned. She took care of them until they were found. When they grew older, they found out that they were heirs to the throne, for their grandfather was king before them.
343 - 264 BC: Romans Conquer Italy
Unification of Italy: First Samnite War: In Capua, the Campani people gave Rome their land rather than have it fall into the hands of invaders (Samnites). Rome had already negotiated a peace treaty with the Samnites, so the Romans sent emissaries to tell the Samnites that Capua was under Romes protection. This caused war to break out. Rome won after two years of fighting and increased their land into Italy. Latin War: The Latins were threatened by Romes growing power. They were going to rebel against them, until they heard of Romes victory over the Samnites. They turned to the Samnites, who in turn, complained to the Romans to honor their peace treaty. Rome tried to control the city states, but this caused the Latins to revolt against them. Romans and Samnite warriors became allies, and they put the city-states back in line. Rome now controlled them entire western coast of central Italy. Second Samnite War: The Romans wanted to expand eastward into the mountains. They began building colonies in Samnite land. The Samnites gained power over Neopolis, who then went to Rome for help. This caused war. The Romans built their first Navy and made plenty of roads for easy travel. Third Samnite War: The Samnites wanted to expand southward. They attacked the Lucanians. (They went to Rome for help). Rome began the third Samnite war.
264-146 BC: Punic Wars
73-71 BC: Spartacus' Slave Revolt/Third Servile War
Spartacus was a gladiator that wanted freedom. Over 70 slaves, along with Spartacus who led them, broke out of the Gladiatorial camp grounds. They took refuge on Mt. Vesuvius and snuck on the grounds from behind. Spartacus won. All the slaves that broke out of the gladiator school were trained to become soldiers by Spartacus in Metapontum. They went into war with Rome, and once again, defeated them. Wealth and weapons went to Spartacus. After this defeat, Spartacus marched his soldiers north to go to Sicily. 10,000 of his soldiers were killed while attempting this. Traveling back south, the soldiers decided they wanted to fight. Spartacus didn't really want this.
